Employers are looking for resumes too. Please tell students to

Survival Tip: Job Hunting

Conduct no more than one-third of a job search on the Internet, says Mark Mehler. It doesn't replace more old-fashioned methods. Mehler and Gerry Crispin, authors of "CareerXroads: the Directory to Job, Resume, and Career Management Sites on the Web," speak on "The Internet for Jobseeksers," on Tuesday, February 5, at 6:30 p.m. at the Princeton Public Library. Call 609-924-9529. Job hunters should unfold a map, says Mehler, put a pin in their hometowns, and then draw a circle to delineate the distance they are willing to commute. Identify companies within that area, and go to their websites.

(from BLAINESWORLD #270)

When looking for a job, why be like everybody else? There's a lot of competition out there, as you may have noticed! To make yourself stand out, try varying your cover letter. One such attempt was reported in my local paper:

Dear Joyce:

As the selling director of a large company, I check online job boards from time to time. Here's a statement by a job seeker that caught my eye. I don't have an appropriate opening, but, if I did, I'd be after this job seeker in a heartbeat.--Sign me Impressed Recruiter

Here is the statement that mesmerized Impressed Recruiter:
"An energized talent in search of the next challenge. Blessed with both left- and right-brained mentality that combines youthful imagination and creativity with mature organizational skills and logic. Strong work ethic. Eats deadline pressures for breakfast. Ability to play the Pied Piper in team efforts of juggling multiple projects. Disney smile and diplomacy of a politician. Maintains focus and direction, yet balanced with go-with-the-flow sense of humor even under quickly changing priorities. Able to lead as well as follow. Eats, sleeps and breathes PCs. Phone and communication skills beyond compare."

I love the lines about deadline pressures and youthful imagination.

from my friend warren in Pennsylvania, who does a lot of hiring
for pep boys:

You probably are already familiar with these, but if not here are some to add
to your list. I have either used or considered each of them when I have needed
people.

P.S. I do currently have a position posted at BCCC.

5/5/01

on looking for jobs, always check your college's placement office . . . if you have
degrees from more than one school, check each school's placement office . . . many
schools will even mail job openings to graduates.

also, just walk into any local colleges near you . . . many post their job
openings in public areas; i.e., are open to the general public . .. and even
if this is not the case, ask the placement office if you can see them? many
will allow you to do so.

Lastly, when and if you are in a position to hire others, don't forget to post
your job openings at all local colleges (and even local high schools?
technical programs?)  . . .  send them to the attention of the placement
office; you might also want to try sending them to the alumni office and
the particular department you are seeking students from; e.g.,
business . . . this is a great way to recruit past, present and future
graduates--and it only costs you the time and postage.

that you check this out; you have nothing to lose!!!

New York Times on the Web - Working

45. http://www.nytimes.com/library/financial/01working-index.html

This timely feature describes the changing face of the American
workplace through articles that focus on offbeat occupations,
interesting job transitions, and the influence of the Internet in
altering the style and substance of our work-lives. The rise of
the Internet has reshaped the employment landscape in terms of
occupational trends, as well as changing the way we seek employment
or locate qualified employees. One article profiles a net nanny,
a hair-implant stylist, a funeral-home greeter, and a Murphy-bed
installer -- jobs your guidance counselor forgot to tell you
about.

FEEDBACK from somebody I had sent jobs list to:

Those on-line resources were very good, especially the Jobs Bank one
for Minnesota.  Got quite a few interviews from that one.  I got two job offers, and I'm glad I took the one I did.

NOTE:
for above site, previously mentioned, go to:
33. http://www.ajb.dni.us/seeker/search/

this is for jobs throughout the country . . .  1,437,781 jobs were
posted the last time I checked!

There is another job website,
32. http://www.techies.com
that is supposed to be very good too.  One of the guys from work told me about it.

NOTE:
just checked . . . lot of good stuff here for those interested in technical careers.

I've previously mentioned
